How the Newark Dead Zone map works

How the Newark Dead Zone map works

Newark Dead Zone runs on a map of Newark and nearby towns in Essex and Union County. The map is built from real data, so the streets, buildings and rivers match the area.

Where the map comes from

  • Streets, buildings, bridges and rivers come from OpenStreetMap.
  • Terrain height comes from USGS elevation data.
  • Town boundaries come from Overture Maps.
  • Places such as stations, shops and emergency buildings come from OpenStreetMap and Overture Maps. Commercial places use generic names.

How the world loads

The city is not loaded all at once. Tiles of the map load around you as you move and unload behind you, so the world can be large without slowing the game down.

Places you'll find

The map marks places you can search for supplies and shelter. The game tracks these types:

  • Gas stations, grocery stores and pharmacies
  • Hospitals and clinics
  • Schools and colleges
  • Police and fire stations
  • Libraries and post offices
  • Shelters and train stations

Open the map with M to see where you are relative to these places. Read the controls and offline guide to learn how to move, fight and use items.

Time and weather

The game uses real New York time, so the sun and moon match where they are over Newark. When the live feed is reachable, the weather at Newark Liberty is used too. Offline, the game uses a seasonal estimate instead.
